4k/UHD Hype or Reality ?

Cautious optimism about the future of 4k/UHD was perhaps the best way to describe the showing of 4k/UHD at the recent IBC show in Amsterdam. The industry, perhaps still smarting from the hype showered on 3D a few years ago at IBC and NAB, is looking at consumer demand and availability of distribution and programing for 4k/UHD as the yardsticks to measure success.  This notwithstanding, there were quite a few announcements and discussions at IBC on the future of 4k/UHD as well as some new research findings from SCRI to suggest that this time (as opposed to the case with 3D) it may not be all hype. Telecines/film scanners serve multiple markets in post production with projects like digital dailies, real-time color/contrast correction, background grading, color isolation and film scanning for video, DVD, SD, HD, HD DVD, digital projection and world distribution.

These devices make it possible for cinematographers to directly control post-production costs by involving themselves with post houses before a final cut is made.

The newer PC-based technologies have streamlined the scanning process, with digital dailies previewed on 2K telecines by cinematographers. HD dailies are also highly in demand as masters for testing to preview audiences. When you add in the newest 3D technologies, telecines / film scanners are simply indispensable.

News Corp. Q2 Up as a result of Improved US Broadcasting & Cable Sectors

News Corporation reported second quarter total segment operating income(1) of $1.29 billion compared with $712 million of total segment operating income reported a year ago. The prior year’s second quarter results included a $500 million litigation settlement charge at the Company’s integrated marketing services business, which is part of the Publishing segment. Excluding this charge, second quarter segment operating profit increased 6% over the prior year. This growth reflects significant profit increases at the Cable Network Programming and Television segments, partially offset by decreases at the Filmed Entertainment and Other segments.

According to a new study by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, CEO’s across the board have honed their cost discipline during the recession, and maintained a patient optimism about their post-crisis growth prospects. Sure enough, things got better. Now, they’re setting their sights on more immediate growth—as evidenced by the big jump in 12-month revenue growth prospects in this year’s PWC CEO Survey. Confidence levels are rising virtually across the board—whether broken down by location, sector, or size.
